This summer Blackpool Zoo is set to unveil Gorilla Mountain, its most adventurous project. Bosses are literally opening the doors of the enclosure to let the three gorillas out into the grounds of the East Park Drive attraction. A causeway will link their home to the island on Central Lake where the three Western Lowland gorillas will be able to play with activity equipment set among natural foliage in clear view of the public.
The latest addition to the troups is Jitu, a 35 stone male who was brought from Germany in the hope that he will breed with the two existing gorillas, Cookie and Lomie. Another popular attraction is Lemur Wood, an exciting walk-through enclosure on the northern bank of Flamingo Lake, believed to be the first of its kind in Europe. The Lemurs are 'free' within the walk area, making this the closest possible encounter with these wonderful and inquisitive creatures. Just as importantly, the exhibit provides a safe, natural home where the colony can live and develop naturally. The original site of the zoo's exotic bird enclosure, damaged by high winds in the 1980's, is now home to some of Europe and the Middle East' s most spectacular larger species of birds such as Spoonbils and Cranes in a free flight bird aviary. Daily flight demonstrations featuring exotic birds in a dedicated amphitheatre are now a regular feature in the Children's Zoo.
More visitor interactive feeding times have been introduced allowing for question and answer session with the keepers. Look out for the new camel encounter where these ships of the desert will be introduced to visitors during a daily walk about. New arrivals in the last couple of months include three baby lemurs, a miniture donkey, a rare De Braza monkey, Cameroon sheep, marmosets, cotton topped tamarinds and pygmy goats. The zoo has also taken delivery of Marcella and Indra, two female Asian elephants, victims of a bankrupt German zoo, who have joined the existing elephants Jane and Crumple. Look out, too, for a state of the art simulator offering a fantastic ride with the dolphins experience and other features. Investment in Blackpool Zoo by owners Blackpool Council has brought all manner of improvment to the animal quarters and better facilities for visitors making the safari to the attention, which nestles beyond Stanley Park The Seymour Hotel is only a ten minute drive from Stanley Park.
